Final Fantasy VII Revelation goes hands-on at TGS 2026, showing the trilogy's endgame

Square Enix let fans go hands-on with Final Fantasy VII Revelation at TGS 2026, debuting Vincent and Cid as playable characters and confirming a same-day launch on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC in April 2027.

Square Enix used Tokyo Game Show 2026, running in Chiba through September 21 and marking the show's 30th anniversary, to let fans actually get their hands on Final Fantasy VII Revelation for the first time. According to PlayStation Blog's official hands-on report, the demo dropped players straight into the Whirlwind Maze, a combat-heavy stretch near the story's endgame, right as the party closes in on Sephiroth.

The detail that stood out most was the playable debut of Vincent and Cid, who join Cloud's party in this demo. Vincent fights by alternating gunfire with a monstrous transformation: landing consecutive hits upgrades his form from Blood Moon to Execration and then Retribution, but triggering the transformation with R1 drains his max HP as his Chaos level climbs, so it's the kind of power that genuinely costs something. Cid, meanwhile, is the aerial combat specialist with his spear, including a Target Spear ability that pins enemies in midair.

Cloud also showed up equipped with the new FITS system (Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear), which essentially swaps his uniform for different combat specializations. Between Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner loadouts, each one unlocks a distinct playstyle, and the Summoner version lets him call in Ifrit, Shiva, and Titan mid-fight. The demo's boss was Jenova Death, a spiky mass that throws out wide area fire attacks and forces players to destroy its tentacles before they can chip away at the main body's HP.

Square Enix confirmed Revelation closes out the FFVII Remake trilogy on April 8, 2027, and the real news here is the platform lineup: unlike Remake and Rebirth, which launched on PS5 first and everywhere else later, Revelation ships the same day on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).

For anyone who's followed the trilogy since 2020 while it stayed exclusive (or close to it) to Sony hardware, that simultaneous launch is the part that actually matters: the ending won't be locked away from Xbox owners or PC only players like it was before. And letting press and fans play exactly the section that brushes up against Sephiroth, this close to the climax, says Square Enix feels confident enough about the endgame to stop guarding it until launch. It's still a gamble to show this much this early, but after Rebirth split opinion on a few fronts, it makes sense the studio wants more direct contact with the people actually buying the game.
