Minecraft Is Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, With a Visual Upgrade

With exactly one month to go before launch, Mojang confirmed that Minecraft is properly arriving on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27. This isn't the old game running through backward compatibility, it's a native version built to take advantage of the new console's stronger hardware.

The big visual upgrade is called Vibrant Visuals, and it ships turned on by default this time. It's the same lighting, shadow and volumetric fog package Mojang already rolled out on other platforms, now running out of the box on Switch 2 without anyone needing to flip a setting.

There are limits, though. The effects won't work during split-screen local multiplayer or in certain Marketplace worlds, which makes sense given what the Switch 2 hardware can realistically push, but it's worth getting used to the idea that not every session is going to look equally sharp.

The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, exclusive to Nintendo's versions of the game, also got a refresh to take advantage of the new visuals. Spots like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza look sharper now, one of those details only players who already spent time with Minecraft on the original Switch will really appreciate.

Anyone who already owns the game on regular Switch gets a confirmed digital upgrade path, and save data is expected to carry over straight to Switch 2. The catch is Mojang still hasn't said whether that upgrade will be free or paid, promising more details closer to launch. That's a loose end that honestly should have been nailed down before the announcement went out.

At the end of the day this is about as predictable a move as it gets. Minecraft is basically mandatory on any new Nintendo console, so there was no real chance Mojang would leave Switch 2 without a proper version for long. The only open question is the upgrade price, because if it lands too high, plenty of players will just stick with the original Switch and not miss the visual bump all that much.
