Arc System Works and Sony have locked in a release date for Phoenix Cyclops, the first extra fighter in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls' Year 1 Pass: November 2. The news came straight from the PlayStation Blog, written by producer Takeshi Yamanaka, closing out the wait since the character was first teased back in July at San Diego Comic-Con.
The design choice is what stands out here. Instead of going with the comic-classic look everyone expects, the team picked his Phoenix Five version, the one soaked in Phoenix Force energy from the 2012 Avengers vs. X-Men event. The stated reasoning: Cyclops has shown up in basically every Marvel fighting game since the 90s, so a fresher take felt overdue.
On the gameplay side he's shaping up as an all-rounder, leaning on Optic Blasts for long range pokes and wide area attacks that eat up screen space. The neat twist is the Solar Shards mechanic: land four of them and he flips into Dark Phoenix form, a stronger but self-damaging state that should spark plenty of debate once players start building tier lists.
Buyers (or anyone holding the Year 1 Pass) also get two bonus costumes the same day, Classic and Legacy, both pulling from his comic and animated history. Basically a consolation prize for fans who wanted the regular Scott Summers instead of the fiery variant.
Still on the fence? PS Plus Premium subscribers can jump into a free three hour trial right now, and the game is also running a sale on the PlayStation Store. Anyone attending EVO France, running October 9 through 11, gets early hands-on time with Phoenix Cyclops before launch.
Honestly, this drop says more about the game's current standing than about the character itself. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls sold well on PS5 back in August but cooled off afterward, not helped by a rough PC port, and post-launch support like this is exactly what decides whether a fighter sticks around at tournaments or quietly fades a year later. Picking a less obvious skin for the character is a calculated bet too: it might annoy purists who just wanted plain old Cyclops, but it signals the studio is willing to take some chances with the roster.
With three more Year 1 fighters still to come, November works as a decent gauge: if the community takes to Phoenix Cyclops, confidence in the rest of the content plan goes up fast.
