Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember gets a release date and a free demo you can play right now

At Tokyo Game Show 2026, Team Ninja confirmed the Three Kingdoms soulslike arrives in March 2027 and released a playable alpha demo running through the end of September.

Team Ninja used its Tokyo Game Show 2026 spot to finally lock in a date: Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember launches March 4, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC via Steam, with a simultaneous day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.

What's more interesting than the date itself is what shipped alongside it: a playable alpha demo, live right now through September 30 on every platform except Switch 2 and Xbox Cloud. Finish it and you get the Fledgling Phoenix Helmet as a bonus for the full game, the classic hook to get people to download roughly 40GB just to try it out.

The demo takes place on the open field of Changban, with three-player co-op against Cao Cao's forces, plus an early build of the character creator. It's a real chance to feel the combat changes firsthand before launch, something FromSoftware rarely offers and that here doubles as a marketing angle.

The sequel keeps the Romance of the Three Kingdoms backdrop but now follows a new protagonist and childhood friend Pang Tong after Cao Cao's forces raze their village, building toward the Battle of Red Cliffs. Combat gets new Insight Skills that beef up the deflect-and-counter loop, plus a reworked morale system that lets you convert enemy officers to your side instead of just cutting everyone down.

The original Wo Long quietly racked up around 7 million players without much fanfare, so it's easy to see why Team Ninja feels confident shipping a demo this early, six months ahead of launch. In practice it's a pure temperature check: if the feedback comes back rough, there's still time to adjust without pushing the date.

If you're into soulslikes but burned out on FromSoftware, this is worth watching: mixing aggressive deflects with elemental techniques and now diplomacy over captured officers could be the twist the genre needed. Still, take the TGS trailer with a grain of salt until you've played the demo yourself, since showcase footage always shows a game on its best possible day.
