After almost three decades living (almost) exclusively off Pokémon, Game Freak decided to test its legs somewhere else. On Monday the studio revealed Ame no Chi Hare Onna, still a working title, and the most eye-catching part isn't really the genre. It's the pitch: a free mobile game the studio calls a "laundry game" that ties what happens on screen to Japan's actual, real-time weather forecast.
The project is co-developed with CHRONOGATE and is headed to iOS and Android this coming Japanese winter, with no firm date yet. The story is set in modern-day Japan and follows the Hare Onna, magical girls who turn weather into power to brighten people's moods, aided by spirit companions called Kumorin. The lead character is Himawari Harewatari, voiced by Hiyori Kono with character design by Aki Minamino, while Game Freak's own Kyoko Abe designed her Kumorin partner, named Pon Arai and voiced by Yuki Nagano.
Directing and producing the whole thing is Shigeru Ohmori, who has helmed mainline Pokémon games in recent years and also worked on the Pokémon Pokopia concept. Putting someone with that resume on a brand new project isn't a small gesture. It reads like a real bet on this original property, not a side experiment nobody at the company cares much about.
In practice, tying a mechanic to real weather is a gamble. It works when it builds a genuine daily habit, the way Animal Crossing's real-time clock kept people coming back day after day, but it can also end up as a cute coat of paint over a fairly generic free-to-play loop if the gameplay underneath doesn't hold up. The timing matters too: with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company controlling most of the actual Pokémon brand power, owning a fully original IP gives Game Freak a way to build value it doesn't have to split with anyone else.
The studio also ran a stream called the "Hare Onna Club Meeting" on announcement day to flesh out more of the game's world. For now the official material is limited to a teaser and a key visual, so anyone hoping to see real gameplay will have to wait a bit longer. Still, the message landed clearly enough: Game Freak wants to be known for more than Pikachu.
