Xbox ran its ID@Xbox showcase alongside IGN this Tuesday (the 20th), and the lineup was stacked: nearly 20 indie games, most of them with locked release dates. Buried in that pile of smaller titles were two much bigger surprises that ended up stealing the show: a remaster of The Wolf Among Us and the unexpected comeback of Shrek 2 in remastered form.

The Wolf Among Us Remastered, based on the Fables comics, launches October 29 on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One (PS5, Switch 2, Switch and PC versions land the same day, according to Xbox Wire). Telltale is promising reworked visuals, redone audio, a Noir Mode that renders the whole story in black and white, and over an hour of bonus content, including scenes that were originally cut. For anyone who's been waiting on the sequel, The Wolf Among Us 2, set for 2027, this remaster basically doubles as a warm-up lap through Bigby Wolf's first case before the follow-up shows up.

Shrek 2 Remastered had already been leaking for days through Microsoft Store listings, and Xbox made it official during the showcase: the game, based on the 2004 movie rather than the cartoon, arrives November 10 with reworked textures, 4K resolution, a new Photo Mode and even a Cheat Mode. The best part is the multiplayer: local or online co-op for up to four players. It's the kind of announcement that sounds silly on paper and works precisely because of that. Nobody was expecting a nearly 20-year-old licensed movie tie-in to get this treatment, which is exactly why it spread so fast.

The showcase also locked in dates for three other games fans had been tracking closely. Mouthwashing, the psychological horror set on a drifting cargo freighter, hits consoles (Xbox One included) and Game Pass on October 29, after previously being a PC-only hit. Scramble Knights Online, a shared-world action RPG, launches October 26 as a Game Pass day-one title. And Zero Parades: Director's Cut, ZA/UM's expanded espionage RPG, arrives November 3 with roughly 40,000 words of new story and full English voice acting.

Beyond those near-term dates, the stream also set aside room for a handful of 2027 reveals, like Magenta Down (a sci-fi survival game from the Unto the End team) and Love Is a Roguelite, an odd mashup of turn-based tactics and a dating sim. None of those come close to the Shrek 2 buzz, but they show Xbox is still leaning on these smaller showcases to give indie studios a stage they wouldn't otherwise get at a bigger event.

For anyone who only cares about the big releases, the takeaway here is pretty blunt: Microsoft is chasing nostalgia more opportunistically than it has in recent years, pulling up both a cult classic (Wolf Among Us) and an almost-forgotten movie tie-in (Shrek 2) at the same time. It's a smart short-term play for Game Pass, but it's also a reminder that the remaster well still has plenty left in it before it runs dry.
