Square Enix is releasing Final Fantasy Resonance today, October 22, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC. It's the mainline series' first game built around the HD-2D look, that blend of retro sprites with modern lighting and depth that already worked well in Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy.
The strangest part is where the story actually comes from. Resonance isn't a brand new plot: it rebuilds the first story arc of Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, the mobile gacha RPG that ran for years in Japan and abroad. Developer Lancarse took that mobile storyline and rebuilt it from scratch as a full console RPG, bringing back strategic turn based combat, chocobos, espers and airships as the backbone of the gameplay.
There's heavy fan service too. Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light all show up in the cast, mixing faces from FFVII, FFX and the very first Final Fantasy into one story about crystals. For anyone who's followed the series for a while, it plays almost like a greatest hits album stitched into a new plot.
The game ships in three editions: the standard one at $49.99, a Digital Deluxe at $59.99 with extra in game items, and a Collector's Edition at $209.99 that bundles an artbook, a physical soundtrack and even a promo card for the official Final Fantasy trading card game.
Taking a mobile game and rebuilding it in HD-2D for consoles is a smart bet on Square Enix's part. It costs less than writing a brand new story, and it still tests whether classic RPG fans will buy into revisiting a gacha title most of them never played outside Japan. The timing next to this week's Modern Warfare 4 launch stands out too, it signals Square isn't shy about fighting for attention in a packed October.
If the formula clicks, it wouldn't be surprising to see the publisher mine other Brave Exvius arcs for sequels, a cheap way to keep the franchise visible between numbered mainline entries.
